The total of the numbers inside the T-shape is 1 + 2 + 3 + 11 + 20 = 37. This is called the T-total. The number at the bottom of the T-shape is called the T-number. The T-number for this T-shape is 20. There are 3 stages to this investigation: Stage 1: (Only consider 9 by 9 grids) • Transform the T-shape to different positions on the grid using translations only. (up, down, left and right). Start by looking at T shapes similar to the one in the diagram above. • Obtain relationships between the T-total and the T-number. Show the relationship using tables of numbers. Look for algebraic patterns and check them. Stage 2: • Now extend the investigation by considering grids of different sizes (e.g. 7 by 7, 8 by 8, 10 by 10 etc.) • Obtain relationships between the T-total and the T-number. Show the relationship using tables of numbers. Look for algebraic patterns and check them. Stage 3: • Now extend your investigation further by considering a different transformation. Very important: The T-number is always that number which is at the bottom of the stem of the letter T on the grid i.e. (*) in every case. T-number in this T-shape is 22. (*)
